Red Kites Back Over Ireland
Some great wildlife news. One of the members on Photography Ireland is John Griffin. John is a ranger with the NWPS in Ireland and is also involved with raptor reintroduction into Ireland. He recently took part in the capture of 30 Red Kites in Wales for release in Wicklow. Today, he posted some shots on PI of the release. They'll hopefully be posted in the Irish media tomorrow morning. It's great news. The Red Kite is a wonderful looking bird. They were a huge success in Wales and hopefully Ireland will be just as welcoming.

How A Wildlife Shooter Is Being Changed ...
... into a portrait shooter!
Had you told me 5 years ago ... No; 1 year ago ... No; 2 weeks ago, that I would be shooting portraits with a model then I would have asked you where you got your illegal narcotics from.
After my couple of shots with my friend Ali last week she convinced me to give this sort of thing a go. We arranged to do an informal shoot this weekend if the weather was good. I went out yesterday and bought myself a pair of flashguns and spent the day reading, researching, learning from the manual and trying things out ... oh yeah ... charging batteries all over the shop!
We met up this afternoon, praying that the unforcasted sunshine would stick around. I'd left a lightening storm further south to join up with Ali.
Ali basically took me by the hand and walked me through things. It was definitely a learning experience for me. I was totally out of my depth. I'm used to taking what the wildlife gives me, not trying to position people, etc.
A Lost Soul, Alison Boland
Our first shoot was out in a corn field. I got down low to block off the treeline behind Ali. I love this shot.
Where Corn Meets Clouds, Alison Boland
I like this shot, even if it's not a typical portrait or fashion type of shot.
We returned to process the results of the first shoot. In the end I had some colour and some black and white stuff. I'm chuffed with the results.
Child of the Corn, Alison Boland
Ali, as usual, knew a little more Photoshop than me and showed me a few tricks.
Ali then went for a costume and makeup change so we could do some close-up portrait stuff.
Ali of the Bali, Alison Boland
Love this shot. Love it. I like the softness of the expression and of the shot.
Yes Mistress, Alison Boland
Same shoot, different "mood". I like the hardness of this shot too.
I learned a lot today, and learned that there is a lot more to learn! Definitely going to have to try more of this. And a big shout out to Ali for her help and patience today.
